The Burkina Faso Spirulina Farms
It is in KOUDOUGOU, Burkina FASO, that the first farm of Spirulina culture has been created under the direction of the regional OCADES and the humanitarian association French CODEGAZ. The 3 main objectives of the farm are:

• Supply the re-nutrition centers (CREN) and the Burkinabe health centers, in order to fight malnutrition. This part, sold to loss, is subsidized by the marketed part.

• Market the production remainder (80%), in order to guarantee the self-financing of the spirulina and to offer the African a very inexpensive spirulina ,

• Fight the unemployment of the city of KOUDOUGOU, with the creation of about twenty jobs at the farm.

ImageThe farm production, constantly increasing, is for 2005 of 170 kg/month. The farm is managed like a modern enterprise and since 2000 it satisfies the self-financing of its production. It must also gather the necessary funds for its development. It remains nevertheless an humanitarian vocation enterprise, for its objective remains a minimization of the selling prices of the spirulina.

The astonishing success of the farm of Koudougou spirulina drove to the accelerated development of other farms in Burkina Faso, as well as project "Nayalgué" spirulina, of 3600 square meters, financed by the Burkinabe Health ministry, whose exploitation will be driven by the Diocese of Koudougou. Its objectives are struggle against the malnutrition and help people's affected by the VIH AIDS.

The "Nayalgue" project means in Moore language "what spreads". This farm wishes to be the prototype of the farms of middle surface spirulina, undertaken to humanitarian vocation, that will see the day in Burkina and in other countries of Africa.

• By "humanitarian vocation", we mean that the objective of the farm is to put the spirulina accessible to the inhabitants of the country, this, even for the poorest. "Enterprise" means that the project must produce the local wealths permitting to assure everlastingness, notably financial, of the project.

• By "middle surface", of 3600 square meters, this farm makes the hyphen between the small surfaces (a few score to a few hundreds square meters) used until now in the setting of humanitarian projects, and the big sizes (several thousands score square meters) that are the appendage of the commercial productions (Cyanotech, Earthrise, big farms in India and in China...)

The two farms of the Small Seminary and the Nayalgué project are exploited under the control of OCADES. Some functionalities are done by group, notably the purchase of the inputs, of the conditioning sachets, as well as the commercial representation. On the other hand, every farm is permanently under the control of a specific exploitation Chief on every site.
